POC Receptor BUG Communication Ski Helmet Review

POC Receptor BUG Communication Ski HelmetThe Receptor Bug ski helmet by POC features all season ventilation and an injection molded design. It’s also considered one of the heavier ski helmet models on the market. The design itself is durable and solid and it comes with a couple of colors to choose from. This is a safety certified helmet that seems to have it all and it’s also available at a lower price compared to other models of ski helmets that feature a similar design.

With an overall design that’s more of a nod to the avid skater or snowboarder, this model by POC is a consumer favorite, especially for those who enjoy stunting and tricking out on the slopes. But there are many limitations that come with the Receptor, including the questionable fit and the tricky venting system. Compatibility issues with goggles that are not produced by POC was another major problem that left many consumers feeling very limited in their choices.

POC Ski Helmet Features and Rundown

The Receptor Bug features a couple of color options: black or white. The design itself is unique, featuring a distinctive injection molded style that works to keep the helmet well ventilated. You’ll be hard pressed to find another model in this price range that comes with this type of extensive venting system in a tough ABS shell.

This model is somewhat limited when it comes to the fit. It tends to fit rounder heads the best and fits more snugly than other medium size models normally do. The foam and lining fabrics are smooth and comfortable, while the earpieces tend to insulate pretty well, even though the snug fit will prevent you from wearing a beanie for added warmth. However, because it works well to insulate, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

One of the heaviest helmets we have reviewed, consumers should look elsewhere if they’re looking for a lightweight model for the slopes. But due to the heavy injection molded design, the weight of this helmet comes as no surprise. The helmet’s profile is also predictably bulbous and round, but still offers a modern, sleek look.

When it comes to the helmet’s insulating value, many consumers found it to be average. The earpieces are removable and not considered the snuggest, but they do prevent a great deal of drafty air from coming in. On the foremost shell, the vents can be blocked effectively, but the vents on the rear remain open, which can result in allowing tailwinds in. However, most consumers did not find the venting system to be problematic, although they did feel that more control over the closing and opening of the vents would be a huge bonus.

This is considered a unique helmet because it features an extensive venting system, which many models of injection molded helmets do not offer. Aside from the removable earpieces, this model also comes with dual shell layers that feature offset vent holes. You’ll also find offset and corresponding holes in the helmet’s liner. This allows some air in to keep the head cool. Vents in the helmet are plugged up on the inside of the helmet with the use of a removable foam sheet. The helmet and sheet must be removed in order to open the vents, which isn’t the most convenient or even innovative setup. If you’re someone who prefers the look of injection molded models, but you need more venting than the average helmet offers, then this model might be for you.

As with any helmet you choose, the shape of the goggles you use will matter. Predictably, the best goggle and helmet combination is going to be produced by the same manufacturer. If you don’t plan on using POC goggles with this helmet, keep in mind that you’ll be limited to goggles that are equipped with grip rubber on the inside of the goggle’s strap. This model also doesn’t come with a rear goggle retention strap or clip. Which is fine for goggles that are equipped with the grip coating. However, simple elastic goggles will not be able to grab the helmet’s smooth shell well enough to remain safely in place. Overall, most consumers can agree that this helmet offers middle of the road goggle compatibility, an issue which can majorly effect sales for the Bug Receptor.

Receptor Bug Ski Helmet Pros and Cons

Pros: The snowboard look of this injection molded model has a ton of appeal to many consumers. The rounded, smooth profile, equipped with vents that are well-integrated, offers both a clean and attractive look. With its closer fit, this is the perfect helmet for consumers that are often between sizes. If normally, most medium size helmets are too big for you and small is just too small, this helmet can bridge the gap and offer you a much better fit. If you like the look of injection molded helmets that are equipped with higher end features, than this helmet is the perfect choice. The venting system and removable earpieces allow the user to customize the wear of this helmet for improved comfort.

Cons: Many consumers were disappointed with the helmet’s lack of color options and poor goggle compatibility. The design itself is made for tough, long-term use. The injection molding has a reputation for durability and is what makes this helmet suitable for rough use. Typically, injection molded models are more affordable than the in-molded models, but this helmet with its engineered vents causes this helmet to creep up in price. At a comparable price you can get the Smith Optics unisex adult Vantage ski helmet, which features a more impressive and extensive venting system.

Smith Optics Ski Helmet Conclusion and Rating

With the many limitations of this helmet, including the issue with head size and goggle compatibility, somehow this helmet still managed to score well with consumers. While most models made in this fashion are strong and durable, its lack of versatility allows it to fit only a small number of consumers well. Consumers who purchased POC Receptor BUG Communication Ski Helmet gave it a score of four out of five stars for durability, venting system and overall design.
